Forging Foundation News August 2024
Cleveland, OH Forge the Future Camp Recap
July 8-10, 2024, the Forging Foundation held its 2nd Annual Forge the Future Camp at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) in Cleveland, OH, where 13 students came together to learn about forging and the careers available in the industry.
To kick the camp off, students took a tour around Tri-C and learned more about programs available to them. The tour was then followed with a welding demonstration where students saw the different types of welding.
After lunch, the students jumped right into learning about forging with an introduction to forging (facilitated by Pursuit Aerospace) and metallurgy overview (facilitated by SIFCO), followed by presentations by Alcoa and Enprotech. Students learned about the different processes of forging, how to make forgings, and where you can find forgings. We then tested their knowledge with a fun game of forging trivia!
Day two may have been the camper’s favorite day! Students went on a tour of Rose Iron Works, LLC to see forging up close. They then spent the rest of the afternoon at MAGNET, The Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network of Northeast Ohio. Campers learned more about different careers in the manufacturing industry as a whole and were able to participate in fun activities that helped them discover what each career does. They even got to meet Otis, the Robodog!
\We wrapped up the camp on day three with an activity facilitated by Fives North American Combustion Inc., discussing heat treating, combustion, and of course the students loved talking about FIRE! They took frozen cookie dough (edible of course!) and heated up the “billet” and used 3D printed forging dies to make an edible forging. After starting off the morning giving all of the campers sweets, we played a fun game of measurement BINGO. Milwaukee Tool donated a tape measure for each student, and they had to go around the room and find items that were the specific length on their BINGO card.
\To close the camp out, Mason Weems from Colorado School of Mines gave a forging demonstration and even made different forged items for the campers to take home. Each camper was able to punch their own die to take home, thanks to Finkl Steel for donating the material. Campers then used 3D printed hammers, anvils, and clay to design and create their own forging. Campers left with a better understanding of what forging is, careers available, fun giveaways, and a ton of candy!
The Forging Foundation is proud to be able to host programs like this exposing students to the many different facets of the forging industry. But we know we cannot do it without the incredible support we have from industry partners. We are truly thankful to everyone who supported the camp. Whether that was sponsoring your employee’s family members to attend, sharing the information with schools you work with, sponsoring the camp, or taking time to volunteer at the camp, we truly couldn’t have done it without your support!
